Cleansing and Detox diets

What is it? | Detox programs  |  Lemon Juice Detox | 4_day plan | Is it safe?

A Detox diet is a dietary regimen involving a change in eating habits in an attempt to detoxify the body by removal of toxins or other contaminants. It is claimed to improve health, energy, resistance to disease, mental state, digestion, as well as aiding in weight loss.
Various methods of modifying the diet for the said purpose of detoxification include:

* Fasting, water fasting and juice fasting.
* Increased consumption of fish such as salmon
* Food combining.
* Caloric restriction.
* Herbal Detoxification
* Master Cleanse, known as the lemonade fast

Some proponents of detoxification would emphasize it as a lifestyle, rather than a diet. If there is a rapid shift in diet that results in toxin release into the bloodstream faster than the body can eliminate it (such as burning fat that stores toxins), the body can become polluted in what is called the Herxheimer reaction.

What does Detox diets involve and what are the health risks

During a detoxification programme you are encouraged to adhere to a cleansing diet consisting mainly of fruit and vegetables and to abstain from items such as wheat, meat, dairy products, salt, alcohol, caffeine, fried foods, spices and foods containing artificial additives, preservatives, sugar or artificial sweeteners.

These cleansing diets may last anything from a day to a week or more, although they should not be continued for more than two or three weeks. You'll usually be encouraged to drink at least two to three litres of filtered or mineral water a day, with the aim of helping the kidneys to flush out toxins. However, drinking much more than the medically recommended two litres of fluids per day can have a harmful effect on the body's natural fluid control systems.

Body Detox diets vary but usually involve eating or drinking nothing but raw, steamed or gently stir-fried vegetables and fruit, pulses, sprouted seeds, thin soups, juices and plain cereals such as brown rice, millet or buckwheat. To support the body during this detoxifying flush and aid the cleansing process you may be recommended to take herbs and/or nutritional supplements such as:

* Antioxidant vitamins and minerals
* Goldenseal root extract: to encourage regular bowel movements
* Milk thistle: to help repair and regenerate the liver cells
* Dandelion: as a liver tonic.
* Ginger root: to reduce stress on the digestive system
* Yellow dock root: to cleanse the liver and stimulate the lymphatic system

Example of Detox programs and cleansing diets

Detox cleansing diets can have many sources, but generally they require a significant change of your normal diet. Certain cleansing diets focus on flushing toxins from the liver and other organs . Other detox diets are more general and focus on an all around beneficial effect of a good flush and cleansing. One certainty remains, no detox diet, whether it is for body detox or liver detox, requires the consumption of only ONE food. Detox is a diet, a meal plan, a program. Following are some ideas to show you how complete a detox regime really is.

The lemon Detox diet

For a good body Detox follow some of these suggestions. In this lemon Detox diet , consuming anything sour makes the liver and gallbladder purge stored toxins. The liver is especially important for weight loss and overall health. When the liver is filled with toxins, it cannot do its critical tasks in metabolizing fat. So that is why it is essential to keep your liver in top working condition and to have an occasional body Detox.
In a lemon detox diet, you use the juice of a fresh lemon in a cup of hot water in the morning. The morning is when our bodies are in a natural cleansing phase, so it is a good time to consume cleansing foods and juices.
Then, you also use either fresh lemon juice or a slice of a lemon in water that you drink throughout the day. In the lemon detox diet, water is a key component. You should drink at least 64 ounces a day.
Lemon juice provides an added benefit: it also supplies the body with a good dose of vitamin C. But don't use lemon juice as your sole method of cleansing or weight loss. Although a lemon detox diet is beneficial, it will not be as effective as a more thorough cleansing diet. You will lose more weight and gain more energy by going through a more thorough detox diet.
In a more thorough body toxin flush, you will consume vegetables, fruits, spices, and herbs that are known for their cleansing and fat-burning abilities. Fresh lemon juice is a part of a more thorough detox diet.

Simple body toxin Detox diet

Following is a body detox diet that  should not be followed for more than a week. The pure freshly squeezed lemon juice one week body flush and detoxification.
The first step is to drink a glass of warm water and freshly squeezed lemon juice one hour before breakfast. This will stimulate an increase bile flow and will assist your liver in breaking down excess fat. It is also beneficial in helping your body eliminate toxins.
Mid-afternoon, add a touch of chlorophyll (found in health food stores) to another glass of water. Chlorophyll itself is a great detoxifier. It is derived from alfalfa and acts as an antioxidant. During a cleanse try to incorporate more fibre into the diet, this will regulate  bowel movements as well as aid in the alimentation of excess toxins. Oat bran or ground flaxseed are great sources of fibre to add on top of cereals or to blend with applesauce. Incorporating more foods that benefit your liver is also important during a detox diet. Eating liver friendly foods year round is always a good idea for general health maintenance. Such foods include carrots, celery, beets and lemons. As for seasonings that benefit your liver consider turmeric, rosemary, cumin and curry. A good idea to eliminate or at very least reduce your consumption of possible allergenic foods for a period of one to two weeks.
A  liquid  body Detox diet usually lasts for upwards of a week and consists of just about anything in liquid form that does not contain sugar and preservatives. Many rave of body liquid  detox diets, but generally they need to be balance with various supplements. In general an all liquid diet should not exceed 7 days. For body Detox diets to be effective it is recommended to check with a doctor first.

Raw food body Detox diet

The raw food craze has taken off and many fans are swearing by the benefits of a body detox diet that is "all raw". But what if you¹re just curious about raw food and don't want to give up your lifestyle or the foods you love. Raw food body detox is a suggested detoxifying agent that can cleanse your body of all the waste that you have accumulated from years of eating processed foods. A diet rich in raw foods can set you on a course toward greater energy, clearer skin, a slimmer figure, and natural health. But detoxifying too quickly will only shock your system. Stop counting calories and taking  fad diet foods, such as soy milk, low-carb products, nutrition cereal bars or even vitamin tablets. Whether you aim to lead an all-raw lifestyle, or are disillusioned with all the other diets and just want to lose some weight while still eating  and enjoying the foods you love.

Is Detox safe?

What you should be eatingWhat you should be eating

Detox diets don’t usually have such severe consequences as these cases, but doctors do see the evidence of their ill effects firsthand. Some patients merely experience common symptoms such as tiredness and lethargy, which are the results of a diet that fails to provide the body with its basic nutritional requirements. Research has shown that long-term Detox diets cause the same physical symptoms as fasting does. These side effects can be headaches, constipation and bad breath are conditions which may be caused by your body burning muscle instead of fat. An important fact with fasting, the rate at which toxins are eliminated actually slows down. Excessive restriction of calories also reduces the body’s metabolism rate and the function of the liver forcing it to preserve energy and slow the effects of weight loss.
Small, not radical, changes in your diet can make you feel better Here are some tips and detox diet myths gathered from the experts:
* Advocates of detox  cleansing diets talk about blockages and build up in the colon, but adding more fibre in your diet will help regularity and produce the same cleansing effect.
* Skip the diuretics or laxatives. They will increase your waste output, but they can also severely increase dehydration and change your electrolyte levels which may result in serious health problems. Your body is designed to eliminate toxins efficiently on its own.
* Talk to your doctor before changing your eating habits significantly.

Make Detox a lifestyle, not a one off

Some proponents of detox diets would emphasize it as a lifestyle, rather than a diet. It has made some appearances in the media, such as the film Super-Size Me. If there is a rapid shift in diet that results in toxin release into the bloodstream faster than the body can eliminate it (such as burning fat that stores toxins), the body can become polluted in what is called the Herxheimer reaction.
